Yes we can…but we don't want !

Yet again I travelled back and forth. From Nairobi to Johannesburg and Cape Town and back home. Yet again I do not know what to think. What to feel. Yes it looks like South Africa is ready for the world cup this year. The infrastructure is ready. The multinational sponsors are ready. The tickets have been sold. And yet , it is another corporate lie. Because as much as on the outside it looks all fine. On the inside its not. The reported balance sheet looks fine. But the accounts are "cooked". Just like with the Enron scandal. South Africa's rot is still there….the slums are there. The street beggars. The homeless and the jobless. The vast majority of poor people. With no job and no future. How do they feel ? What do they think ? The lucky ones are being driven around in "bakkies" to underpaid jobs with no future at all. For generations to come. They are the ones that build the glamourous soccer stadiums, the new highways, the Gauteng train, the new airport. But they will not participate in the international joy. HIV and AIDS are still on the increase in South Africa. Just like crime. Because the masses are uneducated. And live in poverty. The lucky ones , this week, just got to see their president visiting the Queen of England. Probably on a stolen TV. In a metal sheet house….in a slum. The same way they will see the world cup. To them it will all look like a dream. A dream that was built with their own sweat and tears. That sweat is different from the sweat on the back of the president when he "climbes" of his latest conquest…their tears are not the same as the tears of joy of the president's latest conquest who gave birth to his 20th child….As far as I am concerned its all wastest. The dream that Madiba had is lost. Its lost to lust and power. Its owned by a happy few.A small minority. Long live MTN. Long live KIA motors. And all the other corporate sponsors. Long live the president. He won the battle. The people's struggle ? …..the people were defeated. Yet again….!
